Getting involved with CAF started out with wanting
to learn to walk and to build endurance so I would be able to get
groceries to prepare a meal for my family again. To tend a garden and enjoy
the efforts put forth in the fragrant blossoms. It started out being
about what I wanted into something very different. It's not about what I
want, but what I have to offer. I learned what it is to Listen and that
others like myself need someone to listen to them. Everyone has a story
and in listening I've learned I'm not alone. Going to a CAF swim clinic
began with the desire to get over the fear of glances and stares when I
got in the pool or ocean to the desire to assist others, able or not. I
walk now, able to do all those family things and so much more than I had
ever dreamed.
With
CAF's support and grant for a handcycle, I not only completed 3 1/2
Marathons but also the LA Marathon and numerous SDTC events. I'm not relegated to my missing body part to define me, I'm
a complete person. More than anything I've learned that once I got out
of my own way there is no limit to where Life is going to take me. CAF showed me that hope of an
active life after amputation was more than possible and that dreams
don't have to die.
A Heartfelt Thanks to CAF because, I can't seem to
wipe the smile off my face.
